THE TAVISTOCK AND DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

THE SOCIETY started in 1984 and have been going from strength to strength ever since.

They have regular meetings, run their own museum in the heart of Tavistock and even if you're not within striking distance, you can find out about the history of this fascinating town through our publications

Tavistock dates from around 974. It has been knocked around by vikings and cavaliers, lost a monastery, been patronised and ditched by the dukes of Bedford and industrialised and de-industrialised well ahead of the rest of the country. Today Tavistock still bears many traces of its colourful past.

As the vikings might have said, this place is worth a visit.
